How to Pass the UK Driving Theory Test First Time
Most candidates who fail the theory test fail hazard perception, not the multiple choice. Here's the fix.
What the DVSA theory test contains
The DVSA driving theory test has two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions and a hazard-perception test with 14 video clips. Most failures happen on the hazard-perception side, and almost always for the same reason - clicking too early or in a rhythm rather than watching the clip.
Experienced overseas drivers rarely fail on skill - they fail on UK signage, stopping distances and motorway rules.
Learning the Highway Code efficiently
The fix is boring but reliable. Practice with real timing pressure, learn what a developing hazard actually looks like, and never click more than four times per clip. The scoring window is short; over-clicking is treated as cheating and awards zero.
Hazard perception: how scoring works
On the multiple choice, cover the Highway Code at least twice - once at your own pace and once under exam conditions. Sit at least two full-length timed mocks before test day.
A four-week study plan
Book your test for a morning slot when you're rested. Bring both parts of your provisional licence. And breathe - this test is very passable when you've done the reps.
