Deciding to leave general practice in Lagos
I never planned to leave Lagos. Then a friend passed her MRCGP and told me exactly how she'd done it. Six months later I was watching my first WispGold session at 5am before morning surgery.
The clinical medicine was familiar. The consultation style was the part I had to learn deliberately.
Preparing for AKT while working full time
The AKT was the easier of the two exams for me. What I found harder was the SCA — twelve minutes is very short, and Nigerian consultations often move slower. Practising role-plays weekly with a tutor changed that. By the time I sat the SCA, twelve minutes felt like enough.
The SCA and the UK consultation model
I'm now working in the North West and mentoring the next set of IMG GP trainees. If you're thinking about it, start earlier than you think you need to, and don't try to do this alone.
