Mistake 1: Revising anatomy in isolation
After coaching several hundred MRCS candidates, the same five mistakes keep showing up in feedback. None of them are about intelligence - all of them are about exam habit.
Most MRCS marks are lost to exam technique, not to gaps in surgical knowledge.
Mistake 2: Ignoring the question style
One, over-studying anatomy at the expense of physiology and pathology. Part A rewards breadth. Two, skipping the communication stations in Part B practice because they feel easy. They aren't; examiners score empathy and structure, not just content.
Mistake 3: Skipping timed mocks
Three, treating the question bank as a memorisation exercise. Explain the wrong answers back to yourself out loud - that is where real learning happens. Four, doing your first mock in the final week. Mock early and mock often; your first mock is diagnostic, not a verdict.
Mistake 4: Under-practising communication stations
Five, arriving at the OSCE tired. Sleep matters more than one last late-night review. Book your travel a day early if you can.
